Customer Review: A real superhero
Our son loves his batman suite, he has worn it from morning til night more than once. The built in chest looks adorable on our little muscle man. I have washed it several times, it still looks great! My sister saw it and is wanting to order it for her son. It is a great purchase!
Have you ever read something in a magazine or seen something on your local news and thought to yourself, "Shoot! I could have had my company covered in that story!"? Re-purpose that angle for a pitch to another outlet which can incorporate your company or product. By beginning to watch, read and monitor news outlets with a critical eye, you'll begin to gain an understanding of the news media, and thus be able to find ways to better pitch your story ideas.
When I was first starting out in my career and had just begun working with the media on a regular basis, I certainly was not aware of just how much of what I was seeing on the local news, or reading in the local paper, was not "hunted down" by a journalist working to get his/her "scoop." So much of the content in the news was pitched to news organizations through public relations!
For example: at Halloween during election time in 2008, the local news in Los Angeles did a piece about two sky divers who put on a McCain and Obama Halloween masks, dove out of the plane, and shook hands in mid-flight. The local news did not jump out of the plane with them to film it. The footage was provided by the Sky Divers Association which wanted to get a mention of the organization on the news - and it obviously worked.
Believe it or not, the media often looks to other media to see what is "hot" and what's being covered. Remember, just because one outlet has covered it, doesn't mean you can't put a new spin on it with another one!
