Halloween is coming! Have you picked out your costume? And more importantly have you picked out Halloween costumes for your kids? Time is running out!

I remember when I was a kid -- and yes it was a long time ago -- we frequently made costumes, but there were store-bought costumes available even then. The big difference that I've noted is that the quality and variety of costumes has expanded significantly. This coincides with the increase in the amount of buzz that Halloween gets these days.

Some people object to Halloween mostly on religious grounds. They feel it promotes a belief in satanic figures and such. As for me, I tend to think of it as a time when kids and adults can dress up in silly costumes -- and sometimes scary costumes -- and get free candy. You know, sort of a dentists dream!

Costumes popular with kids frequently center around movies and TV shows. This year will probably be no different. WIth summer blockbuster release of movies like Batman: The Dark Knight, Ironman, Speed Racer, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Hulk, Wall-E, Hellboy, The Mummy, and Star Wars: Clone Wars, you can be sure all those characters will be on the radar for kids' costumes. But don't forget perennial favorites like Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Robin, Spider Man, and all the Disney princesses such as Ariel The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Mulan, Jasmine, Snow White, Belle.

Cartoon and book characters such as Sponge Bob Squarepants, Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger are favorites of the younger set.

Classic costumes such as Robin Hood, firemen, policemen, and others may appeal to certain youngsters.

For adults, the themes are many and some are naughty. And, of course, since it's the political season I'm sure John McCain and Barack Obama will be frequent visitors to Halloween parties. Old-timers may still come as Richard Nixon or Lyndon Johnson - they'll just have to explain who they are to the generation x-ers.

Whatever your fancy you can probably find a costume these days.

But, a word of warning -- or maybe just a friendly reminder -- the earlier you shop the better your selection in variety and sizes!
